Hoobiyee

"Hoobiyee" is our Nisga'a new year when we celebrate the return of the oolichan in the Nass River.  It is celebrated during the month of February (Buxwlaks) when the first crescent moon is aligned with the North Star. The moon is shaped like a "hoobix" (the bowl of the wooden spoon with the ends pointing upward) and when we say "hoobiyee" it means "the spoon is full!" which indicates a bountiful harvest to come!
